    Selva morale e spirituale

The last collection of sacred compositions with Latin and Italian texts by Claudio Monteverdi is the musical testament of the seventy-four-year-old composer and a compendium of his artistry and experience as a whole. Monteverdi’s unique feel for illustration of the text and for vocal virtuosity, his perfect mastery of traditional compositional techniques, and his breathtakingly original melodic invention and experimental audacity make each of the works of this collection a unique gem.

Italian tastes were the predominant influence on the music cultivated at the Dresden court, and the influence of the modern Neapolitan style is also unmistakable in the late works of Jan Dismas Zelenka. A copy of the magnificently conceived Dixit Dominus for double choir by one of the most famous Neapolitan composers, Leonardo Leo, was made for use by the Dresden court church near the end of the Zelenka era, and the work is to be heard in its modern-era world premiere. Just as magnificently luminous as Leo’s psalm setting are Bach’s celebratory cantatas representing the music of another important musical center of Saxony — Leipzig.

    Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo

Antonio Caldara has gone down in music history primarily as the “Vizekapellmeister” and court composer at Vienna’s imperial court. The central figure of the oratorio is the penitent Mary Magdalene at the feet of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion. The work dates back to the composer’s Italian period, and it is distinguished by its singular concentration and depth of musical expression and by its extraordinary melodic invention. One senses in this early work by Caldara the undeniable influence of his Venetian predecessors.

    G. F. Handel - Messiah

Händel’s Messiah is unquestionably one of the most famous works of the worldwide oratorio literature, and over the centuries it has become a part of England’s cultural identity. This oratorio also played a special role in the context of Händel’s life. After its successful Dublin premiere in 1742, its reception by the London public a year later was initially reserved. Very quickly, however, Messiah gained popularity, and it was through this work that the artistry of its creator found its way definitively to the hearts of English audiences.

    Hear My Prayer, O Lord

English music of the seventeenth century represents an exceedingly rich musical language, integrating a wide variety of European influences into a peculiar musical style of its own. The works of Henry Purcell and of his predecessors share in common a fondness for polyphony, an original treatment of harmony, and a superb feel for handling the texts being set to music.
