Mass in B minor BWV 232

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)

...a wonderful freshness, the spirit of the dance, the celestial dance, which underlies so much of Bach’s music, beautifully brought out, very, very skillful instrumental playing.

(Richard Wigmore, BBC Radio 3, 10/2013)

In the case of the Mass in B Minor, what is involved is not the discovery of some sort of universal, historically-based interpretive truth, but rather the courage to examine one of the greatest works of music history without being intimidated by its monumentality, and with eagerness to discover its lovely colors in their natural beauty as revealed when the layers of performance tradition are removed.” (Václav Luks)

zelenkakoncerty_2005_cd_200_
Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), the famous Czech composer who worked at the court in Dresden most probably wrote the pieces on this CD in Prague in 1723 for the local orchestra of Count Hartig.

Zelenka's music still surprises the listener more than 250 years later. It is truly unconventional even for audiences in the 21st century!

The recording was prepared according to the original manuscripts archived in the Landesbibliothek Dresden. These compositions offer a glimpse into the world of one of the most original and noteworthy musical geniuses. "The performance of Václav Luks and his Collegium 1704 calls for praise. (...) It is remarkable recording which belongs to the best ones in this repertoir." (Diapason, Philippe Ramin, 2/2006)

"Collegium 1704, with the excellent Václav Luks on harpsichord, bring this cosmopolitan era to life quite brilliantly. The lively atmosphere of the time is reconstructed with a 'classical' spirit. (...) Luks and his Collegium demonstrate their ability to honour the high level of craftsmanship in this music." (Goldberg, Giampaolo Mele, 2006)

Orfeo ed Euridice
1894 ntsc-200Gramophone EditorsChoice
Editor's Choice a Disc of the Month (Gramophone)

IRR Outstanding (International Recording Review)

The Baroque Theatre of Český Krumlov Castle provides an ideal setting for one of the most important operas in music history, Christoph Willibald Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice”. Director Ondřej Havelka captures much more than a stage performance: combining period details with modern psychological interpretation he chooses a cinematic approach that literally takes us behind the scenes of this unique venue.
Bejun Mehta, ‘arguably the best countertenor in the world today’ (Sueddeutsche Zeitung), lends credibility to the emotions tormenting Orfeo’s heart. As his beloved Euridice, Austrian soprano Eva Liebau juggles joy and jealousy. Bringing comic relief to the work’s dark tone is Regula Mühlemann as Amore, who cheerily sends mortals zigzagging on their way to life, love – and, maybe, death. Under the baton of baroque specialist Václav Luks, the splendid soloists are supported by the Prague orchestra and vocal ensemble Collegium 1704 and Collegium Vocale 1704. This is the perfect new release to celebrate Gluck’s 300th anniversary in 2014!
