    Messiah

It would be difficult to find a work in the oratorio repertoire that is as celebrated as Händel’s Messiah. Composed in just 24 days, the work was already exceptionally popular during Händel’s lifetime, and it became one of the cornerstones of the English oratorio tradition.

We will be celebrating the arrival of the new year with the radiant music of the southern Italian composers A. Corelli and A. Scarlatti rejoicing in the birth of Jesus Christ along with the ceremonial psalm Dixit Dominus by the Venetian composer F. Galuppi. Corelli’s brilliant variations on La Follia will be heard in a challenging arrangement by Francesco Geminiani, a violin virtuoso who was active in England.

    St John the Baptist

The story of St John the Baptist and of the alluring princess Salome as retold by Alessandro Stradella is captivating because of its melodic inventiveness and the brilliance of the treatment of the libretto, and in particular thanks to the refined structure of the drama and its extraordinary communicativeness and sophisticated character development.

    Actus tragicus

Bach’s legacy is deeply rooted in the musical traditions of central Europe, and we find in the Leipzig master’s works the unmistakable influence of his elder colleagues and of members of Bach’s very large extended family. Johann Sebastian not only revered the music of those composers, but also made himself copies of their works for the purpose of performing them on a variety of occasions. By looking into the Bach archives, we discover a world of extraordinary musical beauty and inspiration.

    Stabat Mater

Domenico Scarlatti won fame primarily as a harpsichord virtuoso and a composer for his own instrument. In his moving Stabat Mater, however, he introduces himself as a master of vocal polyphony, and he puts to good use the excellent training in counterpoint that he received from his father Alessandro. Also on the programme is Zelenka’s emotional music composed for worship services during Holy Week.
