Venetian Vespers

Antonio Vivaldi is usually seen as a composer of brilliant instrumental music, but in the field of vocal music, he left behind not only operas, but also a long series of sacred compositions, a legacy that must not be overlooked. His musical settings of festive psalm texts show Vivaldi to have had the same understanding for the human voice as for instrumental stylisation, and he was capable of using to the fullest all of the possibilities of the human voice, that most perfect of instruments.

Serenades

Two great serenades by two great composers, representatives of different stylistic periods, will be heard at a concert devoted to the sound of wind instruments. Mozart and Dvořák both composed music of ingenious melodic invention and extraordinary charm. In their works for wind instruments, however, both composers went far beyond the boundaries of the original intent of the serenade as an entertainment genre, and they wrote compositions with artistic ambitions of the highest order.

Israel in Egypt

In the oratorio Israel in Egypt, against the background of biblical texts, Händel gives free rein to his wonderful musical imagination for tone painting and stirring musical expression. The extensive and enormously refined choral passages full of contrasts and vocal virtuosity are at the work’s core, and with their theatricality, they reflect the greatness of their composer as a master of opera.
