Sing unto the Lord with Collegium 1704

zpivejte hospodinu highres XLThe second concert of the Collegium 1704 actual season offers the best from the German High Baroque in compositions of J. S. Bach, G. F. Handela and G. P. Telemann at concerts held in 25 November in Dresden and in 26 November in the Rudolfinum in Prague.

The tradition of cultivation of the motet reaches far back into the Middle Ages, and during the Baroque period, the choral motet was at its zenith primarily in the music of German and French composers. The programme, consisting of works by the three greatest German composers of the High Baroque, juxtaposes J. S. Bach’s achievement as the ultimate master of the art of the German motet, Telemann’s “Grand motet” in the French style, composed for the select company of the Parisian Concert Spirituel, and Händel’s masterpiece uniquely combining the Italian musical style with English traditions and the composer’s German roots.

G. P. Telemann — Grand motet „Deus judicium tuum” TWV 7:7
G. F. Händel — Anthem „As pants the hart” HWV 251e
J. S. Bach — moteto „Jesu, meine Freude” BWV 227
J. S. Bach — Sinfonia to Cantata “Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats” BWV 42
J. S. Bach — moteto „Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied” BWV 225
