Missa Salisburgensis

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber composed his magnificent Missa Salisburgensis in 1682 on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the Salzburg Diocese. To this day it is astounding for its sonic grandeur and diverseness and it is regarded as calling for the largest forces of any the Baroque composition. Jean-Baptiste Lully's Te Deum is a supreme example of the French “Grand Motet” genre from the era of Louis XIV, the Sun King. Both compositions represent two contrasting worlds of Baroque music. What these works have in common, however, is the sublime beauty of their unusually lavish instrumentation and the perfect compositional mastery of their creators.
