Height of bel canto with Collegium 1704On Tuesday,
18 February, the Italian soprano Raffaella Milanesi will perform in Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum, Prague, accompanied by the Collegium 1704 orchestra as part of the critically and publicly acclaimed series Baroque Opera Stars. The programme will comprise much later music than has been customary for this orchestra: Italian opera of the
height of bel canto, juxtaposed with late classical works by Joseph
Haydn and Ludwig van
Beethoven. Of the Italian repertoire, Raffaella Milanesi will sing arias from works by masters like
Gaetano Donizetti (Lucia di Lammermoor),
Vincenzo Bellini (La Sonnambula), and
Gioacchino Rossini (Otello). The Collegium 1704 orchestra will perform this fascinating music on instruments dating from the period when the pieces were written, giving the music unusually rich timbres.
