The season 2020—21 will be inaugurated by one of the most famous works in the history of music, Handel’s Messiah, and this “messianic” spirit pervades the dramaturgy of the whole concert series. The unconventional programme of the Advent concert will recreate the atmosphere of Italian Baroque Christmas and we shall celebrate the arrival of the New Year with Mozart’s Coronation Mass.

Chamber concert with Leila Schayegh

With sonatas by Franz Benda, who belonged to the most favoured violin virtuosos of King Friedrich II., the Swiss violinist Leila Schayegh introduces herself, accompanied by Václav Luks at the harpsichord.

“When Benda ... plays an Adagio, one has the impression that eternal wisdom is speaking down to us from heaven.” With these words Johann Peter Salomon, friend of J. Haydn and Beethoven, paid tribute to the virtuosity of Franz Benda. His famousness is mostly due to his singing and deeply touching violin play of slow movements, which he richly ornated.
As a young member of the excellent Dresden court chapel he met important musicians such as Johann Gottlieb and Carl Heinrich Graun, the Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen as well as the violinist Johann Georg Pisendel. In the year 1733 he was recommended for the chapel of the Prussian Crown Prince Frederick, whose concertmaster he became in 1771. As a composer he developed his very own musical language, in which elements of singing he integrated into the violin play.
Apart from sonatas by Franz Benda, compositions of Johann Georg Pisendel and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach will be performed by the Swiss violinist Leila Schayegh and Václav Luks at the harpsichord.
The concerts will take place at 20th of April 2013, 19.30 pm, at Břevnov monastery in Prague as well as at 21st of April 2013, 19.30 pm, at Annenkirche in Dresden. Tickets for the concert in Prague you can obtain here, for the concert in Dresden under this link.
