The season 2020—21 will be inaugurated by one of the most famous works in the history of music, Handel’s Messiah, and this “messianic” spirit pervades the dramaturgy of the whole concert series. The unconventional programme of the Advent concert will recreate the atmosphere of Italian Baroque Christmas and we shall celebrate the arrival of the New Year with Mozart’s Coronation Mass.

Without exaggeration, one can say that audiences have had the chance to hear the vocal artistry of Martina Janková on every stage of worldwide importance. A native of Ostrava, she sang as a soloist with the Zurich Opera for fourteen years, and she is still living in Switzerland. With her beautiful voice, enormous musicality, and enchanting immediacy, she evokes joy and emotion even in people from whom we would not expect it. How else can one explain the words written by the feared critic Jan Brachmann in the prestigious German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung after having seen an operatic performance in Salzburg:

“...What is so moving when we encounter the beautiful is the experience of having been given something we need, when we had no idea that it was what we needed. We suddenly feel ourselves to be exposed and handed over to a power that wants to do us good. Thereby the beautiful becomes an embodiment of grace that has come to us undeserved, and the resulting embarrassment merges with a feeling of helplessness and joy. Toto se stalo při provedení of Mozart’s opera Il re pastore at the Salzburg Festival. There was a lot of crying in the audience, and not all of it was silent. I saw a lady crying, who was unable to control herself while listening to the most beautiful aria that evening: “L’Armero saro constante.” The Soprano Martina Janková sang it with such perfect beauty of tone in all registers, with such meaningful phrasing, and such penetrating sweetness, that one would nearly have to be heartless not to be moved.”
