The season 2020—21 will be inaugurated by one of the most famous works in the history of music, Handel’s Messiah, and this “messianic” spirit pervades the dramaturgy of the whole concert series. The unconventional programme of the Advent concert will recreate the atmosphere of Italian Baroque Christmas and we shall celebrate the arrival of the New Year with Mozart’s Coronation Mass.

Rehearsals for Olimpiade Began

PRAGUE - The creators and performers of a new opera staging of Olimpiade by Josef Mysliveček (1737 -1781) met for the first time in the rehearsal room of the National theatre. The premiere of Olimpiade is scheduled on April 30, 2013. The director is Ursel Hermann, who also worked here on Mozart's La clemenza di Tito and La finta giardiniera. Václav Luks and the ensemble Collegium 1704 is in charge of musical rendition of the work, that has never been heard in the National Theatre in Prague.

„In Mozart's operas, you can always discover new layers, but the encounter with Mysliveček was an entrance to a new territory for me. It is exciting to discover music that I don't know and I'm thankful to Václav to bring it to me," Ursel Hermann began. She said that she knew Mysliveček only from Mozart's letters before.

„It is a huge moment of satisfaction for Czech patriots. The one that we have in textbooks only as a ,kleinmeister', was one of the most important opera composers in his age. He worked for prestigious opera houses in Italy, which is a thing in which Mozart could succeed only partially," Václav Luks pointed out. According to him, Mysliveček's operas didn't mean any revolution in the history of the genre, but you can find a sense of drama and a talent to express it in them. „There's an unbelievable wealth under the layer of a seemingly simple music," he added. There will be an overture from Mysliveček's oratory La Passione before the new staging of Olimpiade, that captures well the first conflict - the contemporary spectator doesn't know (compared to spectators in Mysliveček's time) what came before the storyline of the opera itself.

The character of Megacle will be presented by an Italian soprano known to Prague audience - Raffaella Milanesi, in alternation with Olga Jelínková. Tehila Nini Goldstein and Stanislava Jirků will perform Licida; Simona Šaturová and Kateřina Kněžíková will perform the princess Aristea and Sophie Harmsen and Jana Horáková Levicová will play the part of Argene. The king Clistene will be presented by Markus Brutscher in alternation with Martin Šrejma; and Krystian Adam and Jaroslav Březina will perform Amintas.

The opera Olimpiade, composed in 1778 to a libretto by Pietro Metastasia, offers a knotty story with an Oedipus plot which takes place on the background of the Olympic games. The storyline offers nothing less than a choice between love and friendship.

The Prague production is being created in co-production with French theatres in Caen and Dijon and with Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg.
