Madrigali guerrieri ed amorosi

The last collection by the master of the madrigal bears the subtitle “madrigals martial and amorous”. In this work, Claudio Monteverdi had long crossed the traditional boundaries of the madrigal form, and instead of imitation pieces for five voices, the compositions we encounter here are more in the vein of early Baroque secular cantatas. The collection includes the famous and alluringly plaintive Lamento della Ninfa, but also the very witty trio for male voices Gira il nemico insidioso.
