Missa dolorosa - CANCELED

The Italian Antonio Caldara and the Spaniard Emanuele d’Astorga belong to the generation of late Baroque composers who moved in the circles of the imperial court in Vienna. While Caldara was employed there as the respected deputy of the court Kapellmeister J. J. Fux, d’Astorga merely passed through Vienna as a sort of enfant terrible of the musical scene. His chamber cantata Stabat Mater (ca. 1707) exhibits not only the composer’s skill, but also his ability to express effectively the depth of the content of the great Medieval sequence. Caldara wrote his Missa dolorosa in 1735 as one of that highly prolific composer’s last works.
