Cantate Domino

At the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque, from 1609 to 1612 at St Mark’s Basilica, there was an encounter between two geniuses: the aging Giovanni Gabrieli, in whose works the Venetian polychoral style reached its absolute zenith, and the youthful Heinrich Schütz, later the creator of German Protestant music. In 1619 Schütz published his collection Psalmen Davids, which does not conceal the powerful influence of his Italian teacher. Gabrieli’s Venetian concertos and Schütz’s Dresden psalm settings are supplemented by little duets from the collection Kleine Geistliche Konzerte, which Schütz published in Leipzig in 1636.
