Israel in Egypt

In the oratorio Israel in Egypt, against the background of biblical texts, Händel gives free rein to his wonderful musical imagination for tone painting and stirring musical expression. The extensive and enormously refined choral passages full of contrasts and vocal virtuosity are at the work’s core, and with their theatricality, they reflect the greatness of their composer as a master of opera.

St Matthew Passion

Bach’s St Matthew Passion is not only one of the pinnacles of German Baroque music, but also one of the supreme masterpieces of European music of all time. Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s legendary performance of the work in 1829 started the revival of interest in the music of the Leipzig Cantor. For nearly two centuries, this remarkable composition has been regarded as the most sublime example of perfect musical beauty.

Te Deum

The legendary Medieval sequence Stabat Mater is a telling of the Passion story through the eyes of the Virgin Mary, reaching out with her hands from beneath the cross to her dying son. The text inspired František Ignác Tůma to compose a four-voice cantata with the same title. Antonio Caldara was another member of the circle of composers surrounding the Viennese court. His duets and trios demonstrate his experience with opera as well as with sacred polyphony. Another composer who worked wonders with polyphony was Antonio Lotti, whose various musical settings of the Crucifixus are among the most beautiful choral compositions in this format.

The dramatic fate of female heroes has inspired artists since antiquity and stories full of passion, love, grief, but also defiance, joy, and determination have become the subject of artistic representation in literature, art and music. Magdalena Kožená will be a guide in a program composed of dramatic scenes of famous female heroes such as Armida or Ariadne, as well as lesser-known stories of devoted love, such as the story of the Ero nymph. The music of Italian cantatas by George Friedrich Händel complements the works of his Venetian and Nepolian contemporaries, and the flames of Italian music blend in with the passion of immortal stories.

Sacred Händel

Handel composed many Italian arias and cantatas after his stay in Italy in 1707-1709. They are very contemplative and evokes the ecstasy of the soul as well as show virtuosity and emotions.
Handel’s many concertos, whose form is inspired by Corelli and also by the traditional form of church sonatas, met with great success when they were executed, whether placed in the middle of an opera or of an oratorio.
