The dramatic fate of female heroes has inspired artists since antiquity and stories full of passion, love, grief, but also defiance, joy, and determination have become the subject of artistic representation in literature, art and music. Magdalena Kožená will be a guide in a program composed of dramatic scenes of famous female heroes such as Armida or Ariadne, as well as lesser-known stories of devoted love, such as the story of the Ero nymph. The music of Italian cantatas by George Friedrich Händel complements the works of his Venetian and Nepolian contemporaries, and the flames of Italian music blend in with the passion of immortal stories.

Lamento di tre amanti

After 1700, a whole generation of outstanding late-Baroque composers were led by a kind of nostalgia to return to the madrigal, a vocal form of the late Renaissance. A hundred years after the fact, they revived for a time the genre of five-voice musical settings of secular texts, now with the rhetoric of the Baroque era and often accompanied by thoroughbass. Antonio Lotti, Antonio Caldara, Alessandro Scarlatti, and Alessandro Stradella were among those who left behind a noteworthy legacy of compositions in the genre.

Intensity of musical expression and perfection of counterpoint are characteristic features of the works of both Johann Sebastian Bach and Jan Dismas Zelenka. In spite of this, the music of these two geniuses differs greatly. Bach's music is grounded in Germany's Lutheran traditions, while Zelenka's music exhibits a Catholic ethos and Italian sensibilities, and the two contrast with each other like water and fire.

Mass in B minor

Its very first publisher, Hans-Georg Nägeli, already termed this mass “the greatest musical masterpiece of all times and nations.” The unsurpassed quality of this colossal work has fascinated musicians and concert-goers for more than 250 years. But this same boundless respect as well as performance traditions handed down from the times of Romanticism have functioned as blinders, preventing us from seeing the mass without bias or preconceptions. Even if it is impossible to discover any universal truth about how to perform it, Collegium 1704 will look in on this brilliant work without fear although still with humility and try to show its magnificently vivid colours without the accumulated patina of interpretive tradition.

Cherubini & Kurpiński

The Requiem in C minor for mixed chorus was written by Luigi Cherubini in 1816 and premiered 21 January 1817 at a commemoration service for Louis XVI of France on the twenty-third anniversary of his beheading during the French Revolution. The work was greatly admired by BeethovenSchumann and Brahms.
Karol Kurpiński was one of the most revered composers before Frédéric Chopin, and helped to lay the foundations of a national style and prepared the ground for Polish music of the Romantic period. He contributed to the development of Polish opera, introducing new musical devices and achieving a novel mode of expression.

Krakowiacy i Górale

The two-act opera Cud mniemany, czyli Krakowiacy i Górale (The supposed miracle, or Cracovians and Highlanders), with words by Wojciech Bogusławski, the father of Polish theatre, and music by Jan Stefani, a Prague-born composer enamoured of Polish culter and traditions, was first performed in Warsaw on 1 March 1794. The Miracle, a story adorned with beautiful music that draws liberally on traditional folk output, glorified the timeless values of virtue, truth and mutual respect.
