Mass in B minor

Its very first publisher, Hans-Georg Nägeli, already termed this mass “the greatest musical masterpiece of all times and nations.” The unsurpassed quality of this colossal work has fascinated musicians and concert-goers for more than 250 years. But this same boundless respect as well as performance traditions handed down from the times of Romanticism have functioned as blinders, preventing us from seeing the mass without bias or preconceptions. Even if it is impossible to discover any universal truth about how to perform it, Collegium 1704 will look in on this brilliant work without fear although still with humility and try to show its magnificently vivid colours without the accumulated patina of interpretive tradition.

Zelenka: Missa 1724

At the beginning of the 1720s, Jan Dismas Zelenka introduced himself as a mature composer thoroughly cultivating his own individual music language being rich in a creative spirit and energy. Around 1724, Zelenka composed several individual compositions of the Mass ordinary which connects a unified music expression and uses the instrumentation unusual for Zelenka, involving trombone sounds. Imaginary Mass consisting of these compositions presents an unknown part of Zelenka´s music on the treshold of his creative matureness.

Komm, Jesu, komm

Whenever Johann Sebastian Bach devoted himself to a musical form, he mastered it perfectly. This also applies to his six choral motets, most of which are written in the double choir style. The joyously jubilant motet Singet dem Herrn, the calming Fürchte Dich nicht and Komm, Jesu, komm, full of hope and surrender, are among the gems of vocal music. The important collection of twenty-seven responsories for Holy Week of 1723 demonstrates the brilliant counterpoint and the depth of emotion of the music of Jan Dismas Zelenka, the greatest Czech composer of the Baroque era.

Historia di Jephte

Historia di Jephte, the tragic tale of a Jewish king who sacrificed his only daughter to the Lord after victory in war, is one of the most famous of Carissimi’s fourteen oratorios. On the other hand, Missa L’homme armé, an important parody Mass for triple choir based on the well-known Renaissance chanson melody, is one of the lesser-known works of Giacomo Carissimi, and its authorship has been attributed to him primarily on the basis of compositional parallels.

The music of Händel’s Roman period abounds with the originality, virtuosity, and boundless imagination of the young composer. Händel’s treatment of the stirring combat between good and evil exhibits the dramatic sweep of a master of Baroque opera. The work stands out for its extraordinarily colourful instrumentation, and it places great demands on all of the soloists and especially on the key roles of the Angel and Lucifer.

Musikalische Exequien

Henry II, Count of Reuss-Gera in Saxony, died in 1635. While still alive, he compiled suitable texts and asked the court composer in Dresden, Heinrich Schütz, to compose funeral music for him. Heinrich Schütz kept his word and created of a work of great contemplative power. Musikalische Exequien is supplemented by a thematically related motet from the collection Geistliche Chormusik and also by sacred madrigals from the collection Israels Brünnlein, which Schütz’s contemporary and compatriot Johann Hermann Schein composed in 1623.
