Selva morale e spirituale

In 1641 the maestro di cappella at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Claudio Monteverdi, published an extensive collection of diverse sacred compositions with the title “Moral and Spiritual Forest”. These are a selection of sacred compositions from his twenty-seven years spent working in Venice. From among the collection’s very diverse contents, for this evening’s performance we have selected solo motets, ensembles, and more extensive choral compositions.

Messiah

It would be difficult to find a work in the oratorio repertoire that is as celebrated as Händel’s Messiah. Composed in just 24 days, the work was already exceptionally popular during Händel’s lifetime, and it became one of the cornerstones of the English oratorio tradition.
