Music Bridge Prague — Dresden 2019|20 — Annenkirche

In fourteen years of our existence the Music Bridge Prague — Dresden has become a vital link for us, and we are most thankful to have found a second home at the Annenkirche and a devoted and enthusiastic audience.

Season 2019-2020 in Prague and Dresden could be described as a season of oratorios. The most famous work in the genre, Handel’s Messiah, was complemented by two Italian oratorios that deal with the eternal conflict between good and evil. While Handel’s La Resurrezione presents the epic confrontation between Lucifer and the Angel announcing the resurrection of Christ, Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista is more of a psychological drama, focusing on human weaknesses and problems of conscience.
A unique enterprise was the concert production of Vivaldi’s opera Arsilda, regina di Ponto. In 2017, Collegium 1704 performed the opera in a modern premiere, more than three centuries after the first staging in Venice. The production, directed by David Radok, attracted attention and praise on international stages in Versailles, Caen, Luxembourg, and Bratislava. We are delighted that we could present this magnificent work to you at least in a concert production. We celebrated the end of 2019 in a grand manner with the music of Italian masters.
When preparing the season’s dramaturgy, we could not overlook two composers who have been with Collegium 1704 since the very beginning. The concert Actus tragicus was supposed to present the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his German predecessors and relatives. The final concert of the season, with music of J. D. Zelenka and D. Scarlatti, was intended to focus on Easter themes. Although the concerts could not go ahead as planned, we do hope we will be able to present both programmes to you as soon as it becomes possible. Season 2019-20 was diverse and varied and we are grateful for all the musical adventures we could share with you.
