Season 2019 | 20 — Prague

The 2019—20 season could be called a season of oratorios. Besides perhaps the most famous oratorio of all, Händel’s Messiah, there are two Italian oratorios dealing with the eternal and always relevant topic of the conflict between good and evil. While in Händel’s La Resurrezione, we witnessed the stirring struggle of the lord of the darkness Lucifer with an Angel announcing the resurrection of the Saviour, Alessandro Stradella’s treatment of the story of John the Baptist is a sort of psychodrama with human weakness and conscience at the centre of attention. A special event will be a concert performance of Vivaldi’s opera Arsilda, regina di Ponto.
The opera’s modern-era staged premiere by Collegium 1704 under the direction of David Radok in 2017 — more than three centuries after its premiere in Venice — attracted a great deal of attention on stages abroad in Versailles, Lille, Caen, Luxembourg, and Bratislava. We are pleased to be able to introduce this beautiful work to you at least in a concert version! We will be celebrating the end of 2019 in the Italian spirit, and of course our programming cannot overlook the two composers whose music has accompanied Collegium 1704 from the very beginning of its existence. A concert will be devoted to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and of his predecessors, allowing us to reveal Bach’s German sources of inspiration, and the concluding concert of the season with works by J. D. Zelenka and D. Scarlatti will focus on the theme of Good Friday
