Exceptionally, this year, the season will be launched in September. This season will be inaugurated by one of the most famous works in the history of music, Handel’s Messiah, and this “messianic” spirit pervades the dramaturgy of the whole concert series. As always, a confrontation of two masters of Baroque polyphony, J. D. Zelenka and J. S. Bach, presents a remarkable comparison between the world of Protestant rhetorics with the Italian style influenced by Catholic pathos. We will have such an opportunity at the second concert of the season that brings together the supreme works of both masters.
The unconventional programme of the Advent concert will recreate the atmosphere of Italian Baroque Christmas and we shall celebrate the arrival of the New Year with the splendour of Mozart’s Coronation Mass. Marian themes are the focus of the February concert that brings together the music of famous students of the renowned Viennese kapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux. On Holy Thursday, we will have the chance to listen to an extraordinarily powerful setting of the Brockes-Passion by Georg Philipp Telemann. The season will close again with the topic of the Messiah, this time in the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. The only excursion into the world of the opera and secular music will be the November concert. There we shall present the music of two friends — W. A. Mozart and Josef Mysliveček.
